Card readers, fobs, keypads and intercoms replace metal keys with records. That is the real benefit: you can see who went through a door and revoke one person without touching the lock. The trade-off is that the system needs an owner, because a fob nobody cancels is a key nobody collected.

Pricing here is mostly project pricing. Ask for the ongoing cost as well as the install — replacement fobs, software or hosting fees, and what happens when a controller fails — because those are what people are surprised by later.

Ask what happens in a power cut. Fail-safe and fail-secure behave in opposite ways, and which one you want depends on the door.

Common questions

Is this worth it over keys?
It earns its place when people come and go, or when you need a record. For a single home door it is usually more system than the problem needs.
What does it cost to run?
Replacement credentials, any software or monitoring fees, and eventual hardware replacement. Ask for these separately from the install quote.
What happens in a power failure?
Depends on how the door is configured. A fail-secure door stays locked, a fail-safe door releases. Fire code often decides this for you, so ask which yours is.
