Safe work splits into three jobs with very different prices: changing a combination you already know, opening a safe you are locked out of, and moving a unit. The middle one is the expensive one, because it may mean drilling and then repairing the container.

Expect proof of ownership. Any legitimate safe technician will ask for it before touching a locked unit, and one who does not is a reason to hang up.

Give the make, model and rough age when you call. Two safes that look identical can be an hour apart in work, and the model number is what tells the technician which one you have.

Common questions

Will the safe be damaged?
Sometimes there is no non-destructive route, in which case the quote should cover both the opening and the repair or replacement of the lock. Get that in writing before work starts.
What proof of ownership is needed?
Typically identification plus something tying you to the address or the unit — purchase paperwork, a lease, an estate document. Expect to be asked.
Can a safe be moved by a regular mover?
Heavy units need proper equipment and often anchoring at the far end. A safe technician moves them as a normal part of the trade.
