Add a business

No locksmith in Calgary has confirmed a listing on Locksmiths Canada yet. Until one does, this page sets out what to check before you hire a locksmith in the city: the provincial licence rules, what local firms publish about price, your rights as a consumer and what to ask on the phone. The Calgary page opens to listings once a business confirms its details and states its call-out range.

The City of Calgary puts the 2021 Census population at 1,306,780 (City of Calgary population profile, no date shown, read 18 October 2026). A city that size has plenty of locksmith ads, and an ad does not tell you who will turn up at your door. The checks below do.

Licensing in Alberta

Alberta licenses locksmiths as individuals. Licences are issued under the Security Services and Investigators Act, and the Government of Alberta's locksmith licence page (lead ministry Public Safety and Emergency Services, published 30 April 2026) says that to work as a locksmith in Alberta you must be licensed and a certified journeyperson. Apprenticeship licences are available to people employed as apprentices. The same page says a locksmith must carry the original licence card while working, so it is reasonable to ask to see it at your door.

Opening locked vehicles is covered by a separate licence. The province's automotive lock bypass worker licence page (published 19 May 2026) says these workers fix automotive locks and open locked vehicles, and cannot work on non-automotive locks.

To check a licence, Alberta runs a Business Query and Licence Status search, which confirms whether an individual licence number is valid and can list licensed businesses. The licence page also lists Security Programs at 1-877-462-0791 on weekdays.

What locksmiths in Calgary publish about price

Many Calgary locksmith websites we read for this page gave no figures, or gave general market ranges rather than their own rates. Two Calgary businesses do publish their own prices. The figures below are copied as each page shows them. They are not our estimates, and the businesses can change them at any time.

Always Affordable Locksmiths LtdAlberta Lock Inc.
Service call$75 Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM; $85 after 5 PM and weekends; $100 on statutory holidaysNo separate fee listed; travel within city limits is included in the flat-rate quote

Date shownPrices updated September 2026No date shown, read 18 October 2026

The two pages count differently. One prices the visit, the labour and the keys separately. The other quotes a flat range with travel inside the city included. Ask any locksmith which way it counts before you compare totals.

Your rights as a consumer in Alberta

Alberta's Consumer Protection Act is summarised on the province's Consumer Bill of Rights page (published 14 March 2024). The points that matter most on a locksmith call:

  • You can be charged only for goods or services you requested and agreed to pay for.
  • The page lists the right to "not be charged more than 10% of an estimate, to a maximum of $100".
  • You are protected from high-pressure sales tactics and from being grossly overcharged.
  • A door-to-door sale over $25 can be cancelled within 10 days of receiving your copy of the signed contract, with no reason needed.
  • If a business is found to have used an unfair practice, you can cancel the contract without penalty within one year.

The page says nothing about receipts, but an itemized invoice with the business name is the record any complaint will need. Consumer complaints go to Service Alberta's Consumer Contact Centre at 1-877-427-4088. Complaints about how a licensed locksmith behaved follow the province's security, locksmith and investigation complaint process (published 26 July 2023): in writing, within 90 days, to the person's employer, or to the Complaints Coordinator at Security Programs when the complaint is about a business.

If you rent

The province's landlord and tenant rights and responsibilities page (published 6 August 2025) says landlords must keep rental premises habitable at the start of and throughout the tenancy, meaning the premises meet the Minimum Housing and Health Standards. The page does not deal with changing or rekeying locks. Before you book a rekey in a Calgary rental, check your lease and get the landlord's agreement in writing. If a lock on the unit is broken, report it to the landlord in writing first.

Before you call

  • Ask for the name of the locksmith who will come, and ask to see their Alberta licence card on arrival. You can check the number in the Business Query and Licence Status search.
  • For a car, ask whether the person holds a locksmith licence or an automotive lock bypass worker licence.
  • Ask for the total at this hour, including any service call, fuel charge, evening or statutory holiday charge, and GST.
  • If you are in Airdrie, Okotoks, Cochrane or Chestermere, ask what the trip charge is before anyone drives out.
  • For a rekey, ask whether the price is per cylinder or per door, and whether new keys are included.
  • Ask for the estimate by text or email so you have a record of it before work starts.

Common questions

Do locksmiths need a licence in Alberta?
Yes. The Government of Alberta says that to work as a locksmith in the province you must be licensed under the Security Services and Investigators Act and be a certified journeyperson. The licence belongs to the individual, and the locksmith must carry the original card while working. Opening locked vehicles falls under a separate automotive lock bypass worker licence. You can check an individual licence number with the province's Business Query and Licence Status search.
How much does a locksmith cost in Calgary?
Two Calgary businesses publish their own prices. Always Affordable Locksmiths Ltd lists a $75 weekday service call, a $95 house lockout and rekeying at $20 to $25 per cylinder, before GST (prices updated September 2026). Alberta Lock Inc. lists $100 to $200 for a residential lockout and $35 to $80 per cylinder for a rekey, with a $35 surcharge for calls between 8:00 PM and 7:00 AM (no date shown, read 18 October 2026).
Why are there no listings in Calgary yet?
Locksmiths Canada opens a city once a business confirms its details and states its call-out range, and no Calgary locksmith has done that yet. The directory takes no commission, does not rank by payment and shows phone numbers only for businesses that state a call-out range. A Calgary locksmith can add a free listing at https://locksmithscanada.com/add-your-business/.
Can a Calgary locksmith charge more than the estimate?
Alberta's Consumer Bill of Rights, which summarises the Consumer Protection Act, lists the right to not be charged more than 10% of an estimate, to a maximum of $100. It also says you can be charged only for services you requested and agreed to pay for. Get the estimate by text or email before work starts. Consumer complaints go to Service Alberta's Consumer Contact Centre at 1-877-427-4088.
Do Calgary locksmiths charge extra outside city limits?
Some do. Alberta Lock Inc. says calls to Airdrie, Okotoks or Cochrane carry a trip surcharge that it discloses during the phone consultation, and Always Affordable Locksmiths Ltd says its published prices apply within Calgary city limits. If you are outside the city, ask for the full total, including travel, before the locksmith sets out.
