Add a business

No locksmith in Winnipeg has confirmed a listing on Locksmiths Canada yet. This page is here so you can still hire with care: what Manitoba does and does not regulate, what Winnipeg locksmiths publish about price, your rights as a consumer and what renters should know. Winnipeg opens to listings once a business confirms its details and states its call-out range.

That matters in a city of 749,607 people, the 2021 Census figure the City of Winnipeg reported from Statistics Canada data (City of Winnipeg, 9 February 2022). As the next section explains, Manitoba gives you less to check than some provinces do, so your own questions carry more weight.

Licensing in Manitoba

We could not find a provincial locksmith licence in Manitoba, and we checked rather than assumed. Manitoba Justice's private investigator and security guard licensing page (last updated 16 October 2026) covers only private investigators and security guards, and does not mention locksmiths. The Private Investigators and Security Guards Act (current as of 15 October 2026) does not use the word locksmith either. Apprenticeship Manitoba's trade profiles (no date shown, read 18 October 2026) list 54 trades, and locksmith is not one of them.

So in Winnipeg there is no provincial licence card to ask for. That does not make a locksmith less skilled, but it does mean you need to ask about training, insurance and the business's legal name and address yourself.

What locksmiths in Winnipeg publish about price

Three Winnipeg businesses publish figures on their own websites. They are copied below as each page shows them. They are not our estimates, they are not averaged, and none of the three pages shows a date, so all were read on 18 October 2026.

None of the three pages says whether its rekey price is per cylinder, so ask. None publishes a separate after-hours rate either.

Your rights as a consumer in Manitoba

Manitoba's Consumer Protection Office takes consumer complaints and answers questions about The Consumer Protection Act and The Business Practices Act. Its consumer rights and responsibilities page (no date shown, read 18 October 2026) describes an estimate as a "reasonably accurate guess" of the cost of a service and says it should be in writing and outline the work. It also advises keeping all receipts.

The office's page on home improvements sold by direct sellers (no date shown, read 18 October 2026) says that after you sign a direct sales contract you have 10 days, not counting the day you sign, to cancel, without giving a reason, and that the company must then return all deposits. It also says written estimates do not require your signature and warns never to prepay in full. If you are unsure whether a locksmith job counts as a direct sale, ask the office.

To complain, the filing a complaint page asks for copies of the invoice, contract, receipts and any correspondence. The office is at 204-945-3800 in Winnipeg, 1-800-782-0067 toll-free in Manitoba, or consumers@gov.mb.ca.

If you rent

The Residential Tenancies Branch fact sheet Responsibilities of Landlords and Tenants (December 2019) says a landlord must "provide and maintain sufficient doors and locks to make a rental unit reasonably secure", and that tenants must tell the landlord about needed repairs. The Branch's Repairs fact sheet (December 2019) says to ask the landlord in writing, not to hold back rent if they refuse, and that tenants can ask the Branch for help or file a claim, with a $50 filing fee. Neither sheet covers changing locks, so get the landlord's agreement in writing before a rekey.

Before you call

  • Ask for the business's legal name and street address, how long the person coming out has worked as a locksmith, and whether the business carries liability insurance.
  • Ask for the total for this job at this hour, including any service call and tax.
  • Ask whether a fee applies if you cancel or the job cannot be done.
  • If you are in East St. Paul, West St. Paul, Headingley, Oakbank or Stonewall, ask whether there is an extra charge for being outside city limits.
  • For a rekey, ask whether the price is per lock and how many keys are included.
  • Ask for the estimate in writing and an invoice with the business name, and pay in a way that leaves a record.

Common questions

Do locksmiths need a licence in Manitoba?
We found no provincial locksmith licence in Manitoba. Manitoba Justice licenses private investigators and security guards, and its licensing page does not mention locksmiths. The Private Investigators and Security Guards Act, current as of 15 October 2026, does not use the word locksmith, and locksmith is not among Apprenticeship Manitoba's trade profiles. That puts more weight on your own questions about training, insurance and the business's name and address.
How much does a locksmith cost in Winnipeg?
Three Winnipeg businesses publish figures, none with a date shown (read 18 October 2026). STASO Locksmith Services Ltd. lists $80 to $120 for a house or car lockout and $45 to $80 for a rekey, including a $35 service call within city limits. 204 Hero Locksmith lists a $120.00 house lockout and a $55.00 residential rekey. A-Affordable Locksmith Services says two locks can be rekeyed for as low as $79, including the service call and two keys.
Why are there no listings in Winnipeg yet?
A city opens on Locksmiths Canada only after a business confirms its details and states its call-out range, and no Winnipeg locksmith has done so yet. Phone numbers are shown only for businesses that state that range, and listings are never ranked by payment. A Winnipeg locksmith can add a free listing at https://locksmithscanada.com/add-your-business/.
Can I cancel a contract I signed at my door in Manitoba?
Manitoba's Consumer Protection Office says that after you sign a direct sales contract you have 10 days, not counting the day you sign, to cancel, and you do not have to give a reason. Cancel by registered mail, fax, personal delivery or another method that proves the date. The company must then return all deposits. If you are unsure whether a job counts as a direct sale, call the office at 204-945-3800.
Who pays to fix a broken lock in a Winnipeg rental?
Manitoba's Residential Tenancies Branch says landlords must provide and maintain sufficient doors and locks to make a rental unit reasonably secure, and tenants must tell the landlord about needed repairs. Make the request in writing. The Branch's repairs fact sheet says tenants should not hold back rent if the landlord refuses, but can ask the Branch for help or file a claim, which has a $50 filing fee.
