Two things drive the bill: whether you still have a working key, and how much of the job is programming rather than cutting. A spare cut from an existing key is a short visit. A vehicle where every key is lost means the locksmith is talking to the immobiliser, and that is a different order of work.

The dealership is the default and rarely the cheapest. An independent auto locksmith with the right equipment can usually cut and program on site, which also saves a tow. What you are paying for is the key blank or fob itself, the cutting, and the programming time, and it is fair to ask for those three separately.

Give the make, model and year when you call. It is the single fact that changes the quote most, and a locksmith who quotes without asking for it is guessing.

Common questions

Is a locksmith cheaper than the dealership?
Often, but not always, and the gap is widest on older vehicles. On some recent models the manufacturer restricts key data and the dealer is the only route. A locksmith who tells you that plainly is worth keeping.
Can they come to me?
Most auto key work is mobile, which matters when the car cannot be driven. That is also why the call-out charge is a real part of the bill rather than an afterthought.
Should I get a spare while I am there?
A second key made while the first one still works is far cheaper than an all-keys-lost job later. If you only own one key for your car, that is the argument for doing it now rather than the locksmith upselling you.
