Locked out. What to do in the next five minutes.

In order. The first three are free and one of them works more often than people expect.

01

Check every other door

Back door, patio slider, garage service door, ground-floor window. A surprising share of call-outs end with the customer finding one open while the van is already on its way.

02

If you rent, call the manager first

Most buildings keep a suite key on site. A five-minute call can save the entire fee. Do this before you call anyone else.

03

Do not force anything

Credit cards do not open deadbolts, and forcing a key that will not turn is how a $60 call becomes a $250 one. If the key resists in cold weather, stop.

Before you agree to anything on the phone

Ask for the totalcall-out + labour + parts
Ask the legal business nameit should match the invoice
Ask if drilling is likelyand what that adds
Expect to show IDnobody asking is a red flag

A business that will not give you a range over the phone is the one to skip. Every listing here that states a range has put that number in writing with a date attached.
